  6. SLOWS

One letter at a time

Each turn you change the current word in exactly one of three ways.

1

Change a letter

Swap any letter for a different one. LAST becomes LOST.

2

Delete a letter

Remove any letter, as long as three or more remain. LOST becomes LOT.

3

Add a letter

Put a new letter anywhere: the start, the end or in between. LOT becomes SLOT.

  1. The new word must be a real word of 3 to 15 letters.
  2. A word that has already been played in this game cannot be played again.
  3. You have 20 seconds. If the clock runs out, you lose.
  4. Leave your opponent with no possible move and you win on the spot.

Pick how you play

Jump into a ranked match, invite a friend or practise on your own.

Quick match

Get matched with another player close to your rank. Win to earn trophies and climb from Bronze to Diamond.

Play a friend

Create a room, share the 6-letter code and start as soon as your friend joins. Friendly games never change trophies.

Practice vs computer

Start at once against a computer opponent at any rank. Practice games are never recorded, so you can try risky ideas.

Leaderboards

See the top players by trophies, and the longest games ever played, with every word of the chain.

Meanings as you play

The newest word always shows its meaning. After the game you can read every word you used.

Made for phones

The whole game fits one screen with an on-screen keyboard, in portrait or landscape. It works on a computer too.

Learn words without trying

Every word you play, and every word your opponent plays, comes with a short meaning. When a game ends you see the whole chain with its meanings, plus three words that could have kept the game going.

The words come from a standard word-game list of about 168,000 words. Meanings come from WordNet, with Wiktionary as a second source, and each meaning says where it came from.

Computer opponents, clearly marked

Quick match always looks for a person first. If nobody turns up for a while, you can choose to play a computer opponent instead. Computer opponents are labelled, play only words a person would plausibly know, and get stronger at higher ranks.

Questions

Is Last Word free?

Yes. It is free to play in your browser and there is nothing to download or install.

Do I need an account?

No. Type a name and play as a guest. If you want to keep your trophies and log in from other devices, you can save the guest as an account with a username and password.

What counts as a word?

Any word on a widely used word-game list (ENABLE) with 3 to 15 letters. Names of people and places are not on it. If the game says a word is not accepted, it is not on the list.

What if nobody else is online?

You can keep waiting for a person. After a short wait you are also offered a computer opponent, and Practice vs computer is always available from the Play card.

How do trophies and ranks work?

You win trophies for ranked wins and lose some for ranked losses. Five ranks run from Bronze to Diamond. The exact numbers are on the How to play page.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes. The game is built for phones and fits one screen without scrolling, with a letter keyboard at the bottom.
